It's hard to answer your question, as different authors have different requirements, and there is a distinct difference between a straightforward linguistic edit - or proofread, and a structural edit. If you had issues over creative license with your previous editor, it sounds like you are veering more towards a linguistic edit, with focus on grammar, consistency of tone and lexical choice. Hi there and WORDS! I’m an English native speaker from Australia - and an experienced editor/proof-reader of fiction. I’d be delighted to edit your novel for you. I think the most common thing I do in editing is enable the creative content of your novel to be more obvious for readers to engage with. This is achieved by looking at grammar (especially verb tenses), spelling, punctuation, word choice (so the text is individual and lively), tone of voice and characterisation (for consistence). Where necessary I’ll reword phrases and sentences but will be very careful to keep the changes in keeping with the rest of the text. I’ll point out any inconsistencies I spot. I’m definitely very careful and thorough in my work. You'll see that in the before-and-after Track Changes samples in my Freelancer Profile, though they are not fiction which I now do (and prefer). To maximize the chances of you being happy with my work, I suggest we use the following process. 1. I edit the novel. 2. I return it to you for your comments/changes/additions.
