You could do this with just live and neutral, by using carrier current. How many amps is your load? Does it have to detect multiple switches going open, or just the first one? Do you have to send live full ac voltage out to the switches, or can it be low voltage so that a relay switches the load locally, inside the building? Is this some kind of alarm system?

Who wrote the specification on this? I have been doing automation for 30 years and never seen any requirement this stupid. You cant send a Modbus signal down a single wire. Basic Modbus is RS845 which is 2 wires Modbus TCPIP is the modbus protocol over ethernet which is the standard Cat cable (6 wire) This could easily be done with the 3rd wire coming back to a digital input on a Modbus remote I/O block. That is easy and makes common sense in a real world situation. L

I have previously worked on Home Automation project involving control of switches connected to lighting and inductive loads like heaters. I use TRIACS and control circuitary which are isolated from the mains for this purpose. I am aware of designing circuits for long wires which are susceptible to EMI/EMC and can understand the problem mentioned here. I have previously worked on many controllers from STM32F and STM32L series. I have 7 years experience in PCB layout and coding for ARM based controllers. I can design upto 4 layers comfortably if required. Also, I use tools like ALTIUM which help render 3D images of the designed board with exact dimensions of each component. I further have in depth knowledge of coding ARM based controllers from STM for these kind of applications and can easily accomplish the requirement. Further more, I can help in designing the enclosures (if required) in CAD softwares like Solidworks etc.

Please share details how you want signals to be get. Can we use wireless modules or can we wire one more contact to identify status of switches. Relevant Skills and Experience I have very good experience in control and electrical design.
