Hi, I’m conducting a paid research focused on how independent fashion designers move from concept to sample and production. I’m looking for fashion designers, apparel designers, technical designers, or product developers who have real experience developing clothing products. This is not a full design project. This is a paid research / feedback opportunity to better understand the real pain points in apparel design, sampling, and supplier communication. ## Who I’m looking for - Fashion designers - Apparel designers - Technical designers - Product developers - Freelancers with real apparel development experience ## You should apply if you have experience with - turning fashion concepts into real garments - sampling and revisions - tech packs or technical specifications - working with pattern makers, sample makers, or factories - apparel production workflow ## Questions Please answer these 7 questions in writing. 1. Background & workflow context What type of apparel do you design, and what is your typical workflow from idea to production? Please describe: Your role (freelancer, in-house, brand owner, etc.) Types of products (e.g. womenswear, streetwear, activewear) Whether you’ve taken products to sampling and/or production scale 2. Tools & software What tools or software do you currently use at each stage of the process? Please be as specific as possible: Concept / sketching: (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, hand sketch) Tech packs: (e.g. Illustrator, Excel, Techpacker, Notion) 3D design (if any): (e.g. CLO3D, Browzwear) Pattern making: (e.g. Gerber, Lectra, manual) Which tools feel frustrating or inefficient if any, and why? 3. Idea → sample Can you walk through your most recent project from idea to first sample? Step by step: How did you communicate your idea? What files did you send? Who did you work with (pattern maker, factory, etc.)? How long did it take to get the first sample? 4. Pain points Where exactly do things break down in this process? Please give real examples if possible: Miscommunication with factories? Tech pack not clear enough? Fit issues? Delays? Cost surprises? What caused the issue? How did you fix it? 5. Supplier sourcing How do you currently find and evaluate: Pattern makers Sample makers Factories Please describe: Where you search (platforms, referrals, etc.) How you decide who to trust Biggest challenges in this step 6. Revisions & iteration How many sample rounds do you typically go through, and why? What usually causes revisions? How do you track changes? What tools do you use for feedback? 7. Cost & time What are the biggest hidden costs in your workflow? For example: Time delays Re-sampling costs Miscommunication Overproduction ## Deliverable Please include: - a short introduction about your background - the type of apparel work you’ve done - written answers to the questions above ## Important Please apply only if you have real apparel development experience. I am not looking for logo designers, graphic-only designers, or fashion illustrators without product development experience. ---

Hello, As a fashion designer with 25 years of hands-on experience, I have worked through the full cycle of garment development countless times—concept to sampling to production—across different product categories and markets. I’ve encountered and solved the exact challenges you are exploring, from tech pack clarity and supplier communication to sampling iterations, fit issues, and production delays. However, I believe these processes—and their problems—are highly context-dependent. The “right” answers vary significantly based on the product, team, supplier, and workflow structure, so overly general responses can sometimes be misleading. What I can offer instead is practical, experience-based insight tailored to real scenarios. I fully understand your research goals and can provide accurate, nuanced feedback based on specific cases. I’d recommend reviewing my CV and profile to better understand the depth of my experience. I would be glad to contribute meaningful insights to your research. Best regards,

Hi! This is an interesting research, and while my core background is in e-commerce, product development, and working with suppliers (Amazon FBA, private label)—I’ve been closely involved in product sourcing, sampling, and manufacturer coordination, which overlaps with parts of apparel workflows. I’ve handled supplier communication, sample iterations, cost negotiations, and production scaling, so I understand where breakdowns usually happen—especially around spec clarity, revisions, and delays. While I’m not a fashion-specific designer, I can provide practical insights from a product development and sourcing perspective, particularly on workflows, supplier handling, and optimization. If that perspective adds value to your research, I’d be happy to contribute. Best regards, Umer

I know that I am a good candidate to consider for your project because I deeply understand the apparel production workflow, especially the challenges in turning fashion concepts into real garments through efficient sampling and revisions. Your focus on identifying pain points in design, technical specs, and supplier communication aligns perfectly with my experience. While I am new to freelancer, I have tons of experience and have done other projects off site. My background includes working closely with pattern makers and factories, utilizing streamlined tech packs and tools like Adobe Illustrator and Gerber to ensure scalable, high-performance production runs. My approach drives measurable results by reducing delays, minimizing costly resampling, and fostering intuitive communication channels that improve overall workflow. I would love to chat more about your project! Regards Sjon Voogt

Introduction I’m a freelance fashion designer specializing in men’s and women’s streetwear. I focus on creating designs that align with current trends while staying true to each brand’s style, taking concepts from idea to sample and production. Workflow & Tools I develop concepts with mock-ups, textures, sizing, cuts, patterns, and print types. Files are created in Illustrator and hand sketches; I’ve used Browzwear but found it overly complex for streetwear. Tech packs are shared as AI/JPG/PNG files, and suppliers handle cutting, sewing, and printing. Example Project For an Argentine streetwear brand, I designed a sports-inspired set linked to the World Cup, sending vectorized emblems and full mock-ups to brand owners. Once approved, I coordinated with fabric suppliers and factories. First sample took 2 days. Pain Points Biggest issues are production delays and miscommunication with suppliers, which I mitigate by sending designs earlier and having backup factories. Supplier Sourcing & Iteration I source established brands with reliable production flows, trusting based on product quality and consistency. I usually go through at least 3 sample rounds, mainly revising garment cuts, and track all changes meticulously. Costs Hidden costs include time delays, re-sampling, and occasional miscommunication.

Hi, I’d love to participate in your research. I’m a freelance apparel designer/product developer focused on streetwear and casualwear, with experience taking products from concept through sampling to small-batch production. My workflow covers concept → tech pack → pattern maker → sampling → revisions → production, and I manage both design and supplier communication. I use Illustrator/Procreate for concepts, Illustrator + Excel for tech packs, CLO3D occasionally, and Gerber/manual methods for patterns. The biggest inefficiency is fragmentation—tech packs are time-consuming and feedback is spread across multiple tools. In a recent project, I sent a full tech pack (AI/PDF, measurements, references) to a pattern maker and overseas factory, with a 2–4 week turnaround for the first sample. Key issues were fit problems and misinterpretation, fixed through clearer specs and annotated visuals. I source suppliers via referrals, Alibaba, and Instagram, prioritizing communication and sample quality, though consistency is a challenge. Typically, I go through 2–4 sample rounds due to fit and clarity issues. The biggest hidden costs are re-sampling, delays, and time lost in back-and-forth communication. Happy to share more insights if needed.
