The effect of solar radiation on spore germination and development in Neurospora crassa was studied after the organism has been exposed to various components of solar radiation using optical filters with wavelengths, 295 nm(UV-B), 320 nm(UV-A) and 395 nm(PAR). Aluminum foil and unfiltered sunlight were used as the controls. Sterilized glucose solution was used as a germination medium for the spores after their exposure to the radiation and germination of the spores was observed. Majority of the spores from the various set-ups did not germinate. The studies revealed that 295 nm (UV-B) radiation had the strongest inhibitory effect or detrimental effect on spore germination and germ tube elongation. The shorter the wavelength, the more severe the radiation and the greater the potential for harm. Neurospora crassa can be used as an indicator organism of the presence of UV-B in the atmosphere.
