I have a 1 Gbps fiber-optic Internet connection from Cox (the “modem”), a Dell R710 server, and a home network using a Netgear Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Smart Wi-Fi Router (R9000). I would like up to 100 students to be able to access the server at my home, but protect my home network. Almost all of the students are running Windows 10. Because the Nighthawk router is in my family room, I cannot put the server there, but I can put the server near the modem. I’m thinking of buying a VPN router and connecting this to the modem, the Nighthawk router, and the server, setting up a VLAN on the VPN server and having students VPN from their school into the VPN router and only access the server keeping my home network safe. I would also like them to be able to access the Internet from the VPN router as their school filters sites that we need access to for this class. This VPN router does not need Wi-Fi. Once a week the students will upload a few 5 GB files, and then at other times up to 100 students will access a website on the server for hours at a time. I’m open to spending $200 - $500 on a VPN router, and I’m very concerned regarding performance. I’m open to trying DD-WRT or anything else. I’m guessing I’ll also need to use DynDNS. What’s the best way forward? Best configuration? Best equipment? Best VPN software for my needs?

I have been in the I.T. industry for over 10 years. I work regularly in enterprise, small and medium business networks. I can easily set this up for you. With that being said, setting up a VPN with the possibility of 100 users transferring 5Gig files at the same time is a serious task, and requires a VPN router with enough processing power to handle all that. You will also want to look at your upstream connection as well, 100 users at 5 gigs each will require some serious bandwidth to get things done in a timely manner. I know your connection is 1Gig fiber, but that does not necessarily mean 1Gig up 1Gig down, on a residential connection depending on your area you might see less. Run a speedtest ([login to view URL] is a good place to start) a few times a day over a few days period to get a good average. If you would like to speak further feel free to message me and we can go over options and set up a game plan if you decide to proceed. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Good day, In order to achieve the VPN Server setup for your students. The best way to do it is to create a VPN Server on the Dell Server. I can set it up, you will have a graphical user interface, you can create accounts for students and even set their bandwidth limit. With what I offer you will have multiple VPN protocols functioning at once to serve any type of client device your students have, pc, mobile... Etc. I am interested in the project and ready to start immediately. Sincerely

Good day! I suggest to You MikroTik hEX S (1G model with SFP) and setup VPN server for remote access to your Dell R710 server only. It's a very reliable device with many features and handy (WinBox, Web, SSH) interfaces. I can configure all this for You qualitatively because I am certified network engineer MTCTCE/MTCNA having over 10 years of experience in configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting of enterprise network devices, firewalls, Linux servers.

Hi, the best way is to setup openvpn on the server, you do not need router. Any router will not handle 100 vpn connections. openvpn is a good solution, because it allow propose only routes to your server, not replacing default gateway. I can setup openvpn server, preferably in linux. Its possible to do in windows too, but i never tried.

Good day! I understand the difficulty your facing and in my humble opinion I think the cheapest way would be to connect the server to the existing router (Netgear Nighthawk) with some well decorated cables since you can't move it from the family room. And then setup a free server vpn system (Openvpn for instance) on the server. But if it is 100% impossible to access that router located in the family room, I think a switch that support Gigabit technology will do the trick. Please feel free to contact me, if you need more details about my approach. Thank you for this opportunity; I hope to speak with you soon.
