Are you a Senior Network Engineer and Linux System Administrator with a strong working knowledge of network security and server hardening, cloud server technologies, storage solutions, and scalable web domains? This is an ideal contract for the right candidate with an entrepreneurial drive who wants to work remotely and utilize his/her expertise with network and server development in a critical, fast-paced, and deadline-driven project. PROJECT BID: This project will be managed in phases. Your bid is for the first phase (30-45 days) to assist us in building the required infrastructure to support the development of our new, flagship web application and ancillary systems, and to perform advanced tasks related to our expansion. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a sound understanding of the company's functional and business objectives, and be a self-starter with strong work habits. The Sr. Network Engineer will be a key technical resource for our Senior staff and will work closely with them to evaluate current systems, conduct growth analysis and capacity planning, define best practices and technology roadmaps, and design systems architecture and topology for future development and planned expansion. The ideal candidate will have a strategic mindset, the ability to collaborate well with others, and will be required to have strong organization and communication skills, both verbal and written, particularly for documentation and change management. Additional responsibilities include: - Implement multi-purposed Linux servers in a hybrid architecture throughout dev, test and prod environments. - Configure and maintain network assets and resources (dedicated servers, cloud servers, clusters, load balancers, routers, switches, firewalls, proxies, certificate authority, VPN, etc.), including installation, optimization, integration, troubleshooting, backup, recovery, modification, security, and upgrade. - Determine when a server is in a "distressed" state (network performing badly, short of swap space, short of RAM, overloaded CPU, overloaded I/O subsystem, etc.), and understand how to quickly gather more information and then recommend and execute a solution. - Perform network and host-based security risk assessments, design and implement security-related improvements/enhancements to customer and internal networks, and implement security infrastructure such as network and host-based intrusion detection. - Liaise with programmers, DBAs and other internal users to resolve complex network performance analysis. Mentor software and database engineers in developing applications that comply with network and security policies. - Ensures technical documentation is clear and kept up to date (run logs, process diagrams, network charts, system information, technical documents, etc.) for internal knowledge transfer and reference. - Follow formal change management and incident management processes (ITIL/ITSM). CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS: - Minimum of 5 years of progressive hands-on experience designing and administrating mission-critical network infrastructure and implementing security policies in a multi-tenant environment. Understand OSI / Layer 7 model and various network topologies. - Server administration: RHES/CentOS 5 distribution, Webmin, terminal/command line, kernel configuration and management. - Strong command of network protocols and core technologies: FTP, SSH/FTPS, SSL/TLS, HTTP/S, DNS, TCP/IP, ICMP, BIND, LDAP, NFS - Cloud technologies and service vendors: Amazon Web Services (S3, EC2, VPC, RDS), RackSpace, RightScale - Moderate to high level of scripting and programming languages for system and application administration, and automation of tasks, specifically with Bash, Perl5 (or Python3), PHP5, and Java. - Secure web and application servers: Apache 2 and Tomcat 6. - Exposure to open source system monitoring tools: Nagios, Cacti, AppFirst, Snort, Nessus, nmap, ntop, NA/Sniffer Pro, snoop, tcpdump, Wireshark. - Experience with file systems and backups, storage management, and disaster/data recovery management and testing -Develop Linux systems requirements and specifications for compatibility, speed, and fault-tolerance. Periodically fine-tune and monitor Linux systems to achieve optimum level performance and stability. -Perform software installations, patch management, and timely upgrades to Linux operating systems and layered software packages. PREFERENCES: - Contractor based in U.S./Canada/U.K/Australia. - Independent contractor/freelancer. - English as native/primary language. - Linux Certified (RHES/CentOS distribution). - Demonstrated experience with Open Source solutions and OSS community involvement. - Familiar with Drupal 7's installation configuration and network requirements. - Prior experience working in a technology startup environment. - Health care industry experience; HIPAA / patient confidentiality policies. - Prior experience in SaaS architectures. - Experience working with an “on-demand” company. - Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.
