Imagine walking into a humid room where one enters a canopied complemented by the sounds of birds and animals. You take a picture of a beautiful bird with your phone and your app tells you it’s about the indigenous bird and how the species is recovering from near extinction due to recent preservation efforts. You post the picture on Twitter and send the picture to your roommate asking, “Want to adopt a bird for $50?” As you move through the trees, the sounds of fire crackling wood and axes pounding on trees and machines roaring with the fallen tree thump deafen over the once harmonic orchestra of the forest creatures. You turn towards the sound and where once stood the trees you see piles of paper and cardboard and magazines and toilet paper rolls rise to fill the room. Along the floor and walls are the average global statistics of one’s carbon footprint and personal contribution to deforestation. You check The Good Museum app where you uploaded your personal data and you see what the statistics are for an individual like you, given your background and age and other personal data. A digital conversation on the app between other visitors sharing their paper consumption leads to a live conversation of how we can lower our footprint. You return to your phone and choose to “remind me” rather than “ignore” the app’s link suggestion that would provide you with tools to decrease water usage and where to find recycled products. As you put the phone back in your pocket, a Greenpeace representative comes up to you and asks if you want to get involved: one evening a month, a social group of 30 similar, like-minded millennials will be welcomed back to the museum to discuss life goals and value systems, and collaborate on how to personally make changes and inspire others, with Greenpeace, to awaken our inner environmentalist. You sign up with the representative, excited that you have an outlet for your inspiration. You rip off $3 worth of your donatable ticket and deposit it in the Greenpeace box as you walk out of the exhibit and enter the “meditation room” where you reflect on the recent experience.
