Response to Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave

Write a typed, double-spaced 700-word essay in response to Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave. Include a thesis statement in the introduction and support your argument with specific examples from the text. You may also make reference to lecture material. All sources must be properly cited using MLA style. Use the following guidelines to write your paper: Typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, ragged right (no right margin justification), 12-point font. Include page numbers and a title that reflects your argument about the book (i.e. “A Slave Becomes a Man: Writing Manhood in Frederick Douglass’s Narrative.” Include a thesis statement in the introduction and begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. All direct quotes and paraphrases must be properly cited with MLA citation style, including page numbers, i.e. (Douglass, 33). All papers are due on Titanium Monday, January 8, 2018 by 11 pm. Optional Essay Prompts (you are not required to use one of these but if they are helpful, have at it): 1. Slavery was a system of oppression and resistance. In your paper on Douglass’s Narrative, explain the tactics slave-holders used to oppress enslaved people and the various ways in which those people resisted. Provide specific examples. 2. Write an essay on the full title of Frederick Douglass’s Narrative. Be sure to define not only the words used in the title but the larger historical context in which Douglass uses these words. 3. Write an essay that puts Douglass’s Narrative in conversation with the lecture material on slavery you have viewed so far in class (through Lecture 9). What connections can you make to ideas about the system itself as well as the culture of slavery? Feel free to address images used in the lectures that have relevant connections to Douglass’s story.
