Sound sensor can be attached to arduino which when detects siren will send a signal and thus the traffic light will get changed and much more functionalities can be added to it and i can develop a professional proposal as i have done final year projects and i do have understanding of it. :)

About your projects . you will need four directional mikes directed towards incoming roads on traffic signal . now you have to compare incoming sound signals with signals in your library .and dissect fallowing things direction of incoming sound . authentication of sound real of fake . distance of vehicle from signal (approximate ). now if you detect an actual vehicle is coming . you can not simply turn off signals red that will cause accident there is certain precautions to be taken. please massage me more such suggestions and complete result. What i will deliver . software simulation video of whole consent.
